Clearly, this whole blogging with a focus/niche/purpose/whatever thing is not for me. It’s great that I wasted all that time learning about SEO and content marketing and social media integration, but the truth is, I just don’t care about any of that.
I want a blog in the original sense of the word. A web log where I record stuff that I’m thinking about, worrying about, caring about, learning about, and doing. It’s for me, and my need to express things even if nobody is listening, but if anyone wants to tag along, that’s fine too.
No niches. The only commonality will be that I will post about things that I think are worth sharing. I might share stuff about libraries or books or the important people in my life or TV shows or box wine from Target or my house or cheetahs or the weather.
No categories. As much as I love sorting and classifying, I’m going to force myself to not do that this time, at least not in advance. If categories naturally emerge based on what I end up writing about, great. It will take me a while to overhaul this site to reflect the new direction (dammit if you can’t unhear nude erection), but that’s fine. I have nothing but time, since there is no purpose or plan for this blog.
No SEO. Just no.
No schedule. Maybe I’ll write three times in one day. Maybe I’ll go three weeks without writing anything. It doesn’t matter.
No perfection. I’m not going to agonize over drafts and revisions and making it all delightful and pretty. I’m just going to write what I’m thinking about before the shine wears off the idea. My posts might be Twitter length. They might be book length. Just like those frustrating college professors who would say “however long it needs to be to say what you need to say” when asked how long a term paper should be. That’s exactly how much I’ll write.
Basically, it boils down to this. Don’t over think it. Don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged. Don’t find excuses to stop. Just write. Just share what’s in your heart and in your mind, and let the rest take care of itself.

I think that’s a great idea. You should do this for yourself – and only for yourself. It’s not your obligation to entertain the rest of the universe. If they like it, great. If they’re not interested, you’re not missing anything. The more you do this purely for yourself, the more authentic the YOU that you’ll be sending out there will be.
Good on you
